Men’s Style: Why It Looks Good on Him but Not on Me
This is a question men rarely ask out loud. But we feel it in almost every conversation with a new client. It sits somewhere in the background, quietly, but constantly. And it’s usually what brings a man to us in the first place.

The Pain
You’ve seen that look. Maybe in a magazine, maybe on someone at a restaurant or just walking down the street. Something clicked, it felt like yours. You bought something similar, put it on at home, looked in the mirror — and the result was completely different. Good piece, everything seemed right, but the feeling just wasn’t there. That man looked put-together and effortless. On you the same idea looks like you were trying.
And you start to wonder. Maybe it’s the body. Maybe I’m not tall enough. Maybe style just isn’t for me. Maybe some people have it naturally and I’m not one of them.
We hear this often. And every time we say the same thing — it’s not you. It’s that the piece was chosen without taking you into account.
Why It Happens
Everyone has different starting points and that’s not a cliché, it’s a specific mechanic that’s worth understanding.
Skin tone determines which colours bring you to life and which make you look tired. The same beige on darker skin looks fresh and organic, on fair skin it merges and flattens the face. Body proportions determine which cut works for you and which works against you. Broad shoulders and a short neck call for one kind of collar, narrow shoulders and a long torso need a completely different silhouette. What visually elongates one man shortens another.
And there’s one more thing that often gets missed — the way a man carries himself, how he moves, his character and his way of life. The same piece on a man who wears it easily and on a man who feels uncomfortable in it looks completely different. This isn’t about abstract self-confidence. It’s about whether the piece actually suits this particular person.
When you see a man who looks good he’s probably not thinking about what he’s wearing at all. Because it was chosen for him, it works without effort. And that effortlessness is exactly what you’re reading from across the room and calling style.
What Happens When You Don't Understand This
A man keeps buying the wrong things. Not because his taste is bad, but because he’s looking at how a piece looks on a model, in a photo, on someone else — not on himself.
Over time the frustration builds. Money spent, no real result, plenty of attempts and plenty of disappointments. And gradually a man either settles for what’s safe — dark, neutral, invisible — or keeps buying hoping that eventually he’ll accidentally land on something that works.
Both paths lead to the same feeling — that style just doesn’t work out for him and probably never will.
That’s not true. It’s simply the absence of the right approach.
The Solution
When we start working with a client the first thing we do is look at him. Not his wardrobe, not his budget, not the season’s trends. At him.
We identify his skin tone and the colour palette that works specifically for him. We look at his proportions and understand which cut enhances his silhouette. We get to know his lifestyle and what kind of image he wants to create consciously rather than by accident.
And then something happens that our clients describe in almost the same words. They put on a piece we’ve chosen and say — that’s me. Not because it’s expensive or fashionable. But because it was chosen for a specific person with his own data, his own character, his own life.
This is why working with a personal stylist produces results that are hard to achieve on your own even with good taste and a decent budget. Because nobody sees themselves from the outside. And that outside perspective is exactly what changes everything.
Finally
When you see a man who looks good and wonder why it works for him and not for you — the answer isn’t that he got lucky or has a different body. It’s simply that what he’s wearing was chosen for him. And that can be done for any man. It’s not complicated and it’s not strange — it’s work worth doing once so that everything falls into place.
At Elety we work with men individually online and in person. Men’s stylist, wardrobe edit, building a personal image for a specific person. Our website has a full description of each service — choose the one that suits you. We’ll be happy to help.
Quote of the Week
“All men are different — and that is the only thing they have in common.”
Mark Twain
Fact in the Spotlight
Research in the psychology of perception shows that a person reads information about another human being within the first seconds of contact and most of that information comes visually before a single word has been spoken. What you wear isn’t just clothing. It’s the first thing you say about yourself before you’ve opened your mouth.
That’s all for today. See you on Saturday next week!
Yours sincerely, Anton Masko
