Recently, we traveled to Milan, where we gave a presentation at the atelier of our good friend, Nicola. The topic of our talk was how to choose the right atelier and get the perfect suit made.
Event Overview: Key Points on Men's Style and Tailoring
Not too long ago, I could never have imagined that we would be speaking to gentlemen about the important rules of men’s style in different countries and cities. We’ve already held such events in Vienna and Warsaw, and now it was Milan’s turn. Unfortunately, one of our trips to Budapest was canceled, where we also planned to speak.
Exploring Suit Culture and Tailoring Styles at the Milan Workshop
This time in Milan, we focused on the main rules for choosing an atelier, what kind of suit to select, what to look for, and what is really important in this process.
We were invited by a business club that organizes events in different countries every two months. This time, the event took place in Milan, and they needed our help to organize a session where we could talk about suit culture, the differences in English, French, and Italian styles of tailoring, and the different tailoring schools in Italy, such as Roman, Milanese, and, of course, Neapolitan.
Collaborative Workshop with Nicola: Theory and Practice
My friend Nicola opened his atelier this year, and we agreed to hold this event together with him. After the theory part, we moved on to practice, where we showed on real examples what details to pay attention to when choosing fabrics and styles. We also discussed what fabric an Englishman would choose versus an Italian.
Key Takeaways: Choosing the Right Atelier
We covered some important points to consider when choosing an atelier:
- The Atmosphere of the Atelier: It should be a beautiful and well-kept place with a clean environment, without any distracting smells like burgers.
- Tailor’s Expertise: It’s crucial how the tailor interacts with the client. A good tailor will always ask a lot of questions to better understand your needs and help you find the best solution. If the tailor immediately recommends something without asking about your preferences, it’s likely they care more about money than helping you.
- Long-Term Relationship: A tailor should be like a psychologist and a friend. It’s important that after meeting with them, you feel like coming back. If you do, you’ve found the right atelier. If not, keep looking.

Fact in the Spotlight
Italy is considered the country with the most tailoring ateliers. This is due to the long-standing traditions and culture of sewing that are deeply rooted in Italian society. Cities like Milan, Naples, and Florence are famous for their renowned tailoring schools and workshops, where the craft is passed down through generations. Italian tailors are known for their attention to detail and high-quality workmanship, as well as their ability to blend traditional methods with modern trends. It’s no surprise that Italy is often associated with fashion and elegance, and its ateliers are some of the best in the world.
