How to Choose Winter Shoes

Every winter, I get the same questions: “Should I buy fur-lined shoes?”, “Are they really necessary in the city?”, “Won’t they be too warm indoors?”. And I get it — it’s an important decision, especially if you want shoes that are not only warm, but also stylish and practical for everyday life.

Let me say this first: it really depends on your climate and how you spend your winter. In Poland, where I spend a lot of time, it can be +3°C one day and -10°C the next. So I don’t have one pair of winter shoes — I have a small set for different situations. That’s what I recommend: choose depending on your lifestyle, not just the weather.

When You Don’t Need Fur-lined Shoes

If your winters are mild, you mostly drive, or you spend little time outdoors, fur-lined shoes might not be necessary. For example, I wear loafers in winter when it’s around +2 or +4°C — especially when I know I’ll be indoors most of the time.

What matters more in that case is breathability and comfort, not extra warmth. This is when mid-season shoes come in handy: chukkas, Chelseas, or desert boots — they’re the perfect balance of lightness and winter protection. Just don’t forget to wear the right socks.

When You Do Need Fur-lined Shoes

If you live somewhere with real winter — snow, frost, wind — or if you simply spend more time walking outside, then yes, you’ll need at least one solid pair of fur-lined shoes.I have one pair like that. Just one, but reliable. I know I’ll stay warm, even during long, cold days. And that kind of peace of mind is worth it.

Why I Prefer Suede

Personally, I love suede for winter. Some people say it’s not practical, but if you take care of it properly, suede lasts long and looks incredibly good. It feels soft, rich, and has a depth of color that makes any winter look feel more elegant. The key is to protect it with a waterproof spray, don’t wear it in heavy slush, and brush it regularly. Take care of your shoes, and they’ll take care of your style.

How to Choose Winter Shoes

1. Think about your daily routine. Do you walk a lot? Do you wear tailoring or casual clothes? Do you value comfort or elegance more?

2. Look for balance. You want warm shoes, but not bulky. The sole should be thick and grippy, but not heavy. The fit should be supportive but sleek.

3. Don’t forget about style. Even winter shoes can look great. Pay attention to the color — deep brown, tobacco, beige, burgundy or black are classic and refined.

How to Care for Winter Shoes

  • Spray your suede with a protective spray before first use.
  • Use the right brush — soft for suede, firmer for leather.
  • Rotate pairs. Let your shoes rest and use shoe trees.
  • Never dry them by the heater — let them dry naturally.

Best Winter Models to Consider

Chelsea boots — easy to wear, versatile, go well with suits.

Chukka boots — more casual but perfect for everyday outfits.

Derby boots with fur — great for formal winter looks.

Desert boots — soft, comfortable, and timeless. I love them in suede — they work with everything from wool trousers to jeans.

Final Thoughts

Choosing winter shoes is not just about staying warm — it’s about feeling good, being confident, and knowing that no matter what the weather is doing, you’re dressed for it.

Find one solid, stylish pair. Maybe one lined with fur. And maybe one with some personality.

And please — don’t be afraid of suede. Be afraid of neglect. Well-maintained shoes made from good leather or suede are not just practical — they’re beautiful. And every step in them reminds you that winter is a season for style too.

Fact in the Spotlight

In ancient Rome, people used to clean and whiten their teeth with powdered charcoal and crushed bones — sometimes mixed with honey or oyster shells.

But what’s even more surprising? They brushed their teeth with urine. Romans believed the ammonia in urine helped bleach their smiles. And yes, it worked — chemically speaking.
