Men’s Ties: A Complete Guide to Choice and Style
A tie is one of those elements of a man’s wardrobe that has gone through many transformations, yet has preserved its essence. Its history goes back to the 17th century, during the Thirty Years’ War, when Croatian mercenaries wore neck cloths as part of their uniform. The French noticed this element, adapted it, and over time it evolved into the tie as we know it today. Now it is not just an accessory, but a tool that can bring the entire outfit together.
What Materials Ties Are Made From
Modern ties are most often made from silk. It is the most versatile and refined material: it drapes beautifully, holds its shape, and has a deep, calm appearance. Wool ties add texture and work better for an autumn and winter wardrobe. Linen ties are lighter and more relaxed, ideal for the warmer season. The material always affects perception: smooth silk makes the outfit more formal, while textured fabrics make it feel more natural and alive.

How to Choose a Tie for a Suit and Shirt
Choosing a tie is not about matching it to the color of the shirt. It is about balance. A tie should either support the outfit or subtly enhance it. If the suit and shirt are calm, the tie can add depth through texture or pattern. If the outfit is already complex, it is better to choose something more restrained. The key is that the tie should not compete with the other elements, but bring them together into one whole.
Tie Width and Length: Proper Proportions
The classic width of a tie is between 8 and 9 centimeters. It should relate to the lapels of the jacket: the wider the lapels, the wider the tie. This creates the right visual proportion. The length should reach the belt buckle or slightly below. This is a simple rule that immediately makes the outfit look clean and composed.

What Ties You Should Avoid
There are things that today look outdated or too heavy. Black ties, in most cases, do not work — they make the outfit too strict and flat, unless it is a formal dress code. Narrow ties are also no longer relevant: they break proportions and feel visually weak. A tie should be wider, more confident, and visually balanced.
Tie and Pocket Square: How to Combine
At this stage, I personally do not wear a tie together with a pocket square. I choose one or the other — either a tie or a pocket square. This keeps the outfit cleaner and calmer. But if you want to wear them together, it is important that they complement each other. And even more important — do not choose ready-made sets. They almost always look too obvious and take away individuality.

A Modern Approach to the Tie
For me today, a tie is not a mandatory element, but a tool. I wear it when I want to add structure, depth, and composure to an outfit. It is not about rules for the sake of rules, but about a sense of appropriateness and state.

Fact in the Spotlight
There is no sound in space. Sound is a vibration of air, and in a vacuum it simply cannot travel. Explosions in space are completely silent. What we hear in movies is only an effect. Reality is much quieter than we imagine.
That’s all for today. See you on Saturday next week!
